It was built in the 17th century under the direction of Pope Paul V to commemorate the restoration of the Acqua Paola aqueduct, which brought fresh water to Rome from the Lake Bracciano. The fountain is made of white marble and features three arches that support a large central basin, from which water cascades down into smaller basins below. The fountain is decorated with a variety of sculptures, including the emblem of Pope Paul V, eagles, and lions. The Fontana dell'Acqua Paola is one of the most impressive fountains in Rome and offers stunning views of the city from its location on the Gianicolo Hill.
